Little Hayes and Speedwell Nursery School is pleased to share information about valuable parenting programs available through Bristol Family Hubs. These free support groups are designed for parents and carers with children aged 0-8 years and offer practical guidance, emotional support, and opportunities to connect with other local families.

The Bristol Children’s Centres run several programs to support parents at every stage of their journey:

For expectant parents, “Welcome To The World” and “Rockabye” antenatal programs help prepare for parenthood in a supportive group environment. After birth, programs like “Rockabye Postnatal” provide support for parents with babies up to 6 months old.

Parents of toddlers and young children can benefit from evidence-based programs such as “Circle of Security,” “Parenting Puzzle,” “The Incredible Years,” and “The Nurturing Programme.” These focus on understanding child behavior, building strong relationships, and developing effective parenting skills.

All programs are facilitated by experienced Bristol Children’s Centre staff, with some sessions offering crèche facilities. Free online learning options are also available for families who prefer self-led courses.

We had a very special visitor at Speedwell last week. Dave came to visit and brought his pet Barn Owl, Loki to meet the children. Dave has been keeping owls for many years and was able to tell us lots of interesting facts about them.

We learned that they like to eat frogs and mice and lots of other small animals. We listened to a recording of the sound they make and found out that Barn Owls don’t go “Twit twoo”, their call is more like a long screech.

Dave has looked after Loki since he was two weeks old and showed us lots of pictures of him as he grew up. He showed us an owl wing and talked about how Loki has a special type of feather that is silent when he flaps his wings so that his prey doesn’t hear him coming.

Some of the adults got to hold Loki on their arms. They had to wear a thick, strong leather glove because Loki has sharp talons on his feet. When it was time to return to the classroom the children made owl masks and pretended to flap their wings and swoop like an owl.

Last week we were visited by Dave from Owl Occasions and his beautiful barn owl Loki.

Dave gave us a very informative presentation and we learned about the different parts of the owl’s body, what they eat and much, much more.

You can see some of the pictures from the presentation below. We also learned lots of new vocabulary. One highlight for the children was when Loki pooed on the classroom floor!

Owls-of-the-UK-Nursery-Version-Web

The children couldn’t hold Loki, but were able to get up really close to see his eyes, feathers, and talons. Some of the adults were able to hold Loki and the parents met him too.

Later at circle time we read What am I? by Moira Butterfield. Can you guess what it is?

Thank you, Dave, for such an exciting and informative visit.
